Pete McCoy

BORN   October 15 1856; Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland (Fought out of Jersey City, New Jersey; Also fought out of Boston, Massachusetts)
DIED November 8 1893; near New London, Connecticut (Drowned in Long Island Sound; possibly suicide)
HEIGHT 5-10 1/2 (Reports vary from 5-9 to 5-11)
WEIGHT 145-165 lbs

McCoy was quick and agile and carried a good right hand punch; He could shift feet and fight with either hand; The Brooklyn (NY) Daily Eagle described McCoy as one of the most scientific and shiftiest puglists that ever the ring in this country; He never cared about how strong his opponent was and was not always averse to giving away pounds of weight

It was reported that McCoy had over 100 exhibition bouts fought mainly when McCoy was on his United States tours with John L. Sullivan - against men like Sullivan, Mike Donovan, Dominick McCaffrey, Billy Edwards, Jake Kilrain, Herbert Slade and others; The Chicago (Il) Tribune (11/22/86) reported that Pete was a cousin to Charles McCoy

During his career, McCoy defeated such men as Mike Donovan, Jim Popp, Martin "Fiddler" Neary, Duncan McDonald, Jack Langdon, Jack Files, Johnny Reagan, Jake Pitz and Charles Gleason
