his knockout loss to Mel Brown. License to box revoked by State
of Colorado and the National Boxing Association (N.B.A.) due to
severe head injury suffered in the knockout defeat to Brown.

(Ring Mag. Feb 1948 p. 55) Minnesota News by Spike McCarthy a reference
to Shank fighting for survival after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage
following a ko by Mel Brown in the Minneapolis Auditorium, same ring in
which he gained national attention for beating Zivic in April of 1942.

(Ring Mag. Feb. 1953 p. 21) "Nat Fleischer Says" Fleisher criticizes a judge
for overturning in court a state boxing commission's denial of license to Shank.
This article makes reference to Shank having been denied a license for reasons
of safety prior to the legal judgment. It is unlikely for him to have had any
bouts in the period 1948 through 1952.
